The farm La Sugarella, owned by the Battaglini family since 1958, is located in Umbria, in Petrignano del Lago, on the border with the region of Tuscany and its provinces of Siena and Arezzo. It extends for 15 hectares and is easily connected to historic centers and villages such as Castiglione del Lago, Cortona, Montepulciano, Passignano and Tuoro sul Trasimeno.
The company as well as the various types of wines, take their name from the area in which it is located. The tradition of wine production began 4 generations ago, when Mr. Santi began to plant a small vineyard and market the wine produced from its grapes, expanding from local markets to Lombardy, thanks to his son Giacinto who continued the business. The tradition has been handed down from father to son until today, where the company is strictly managed by his son Federico together with his wife Marzia, current owner of the company, with the help of his children Eleonora and Mattia.
The proximity to Lake Trasimeno, Lake Chiusi, Lake Montepulciano, the pre-Apennines of Arezzo as well as the land itself and the perfect exposure to the sun, allow for a mild climate and ideal for the production of wines of excellent quality and cereals, extra virgin olive oil D.O.P. and legumes including the Fagiolina del Trasimeno, and also within the farm are raised small quantities of pigs and cattle that provide meat and meats.
The cellar is made up of stainless steel tanks of small capacity (10-20-30 hl) in which the grapes ferment at a controlled temperature and where they are manually pumping over, punching and deléstage.
The vines are grown strictly in Guyot. Inside the vineyard there are no anti-insertion treatments, but only mechanical processes for the protection of the environment and the vines themselves.
In 2018 another 2 hectares of vineyard were planted with new varieties of grapes, among which the Gamay del Trasimeno and the Syrah for the black grapes and the Chardonnay for the white grapes; in addition, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grechetto, Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia were already cultivated.
